Ecology predicts life history evolution in birds

چکیده
Although a number of studies describe current evolutionary patterns concerning lifehistory evolution, how historical changes in the way organisms interact with their environment have shaped life-history evolution still remains unresolved. In this study, I integrate prospective and retrospective comparative approaches to ask what ecological factors have driven current variation in lifespan of bird passerines. An analysis of >500 species suggest that lifespan is higher in cooperative breeders and in species that build the nest in more secure sites, consistent with the age-specific theory of life history evolution. A retrospective analysis further indicated that these two traits likely evolved through a Ornstein-Uhlenbeck evolutionary model with different optima for each selective regime. Specifically, transitions to cooperative breeding behavior and to nesting in less exposed sites resulted in changes towards longer lifespan optima. These results are the first evidence that ecological and behavioral changes produced in life history strategies in the past, and provide new insights to understand and predict current and future life-history evolutionary patterns.

Identification of birds not only means identifying the species of an individual, but also can include identifying its subspecies, sex, and age. Field identification of the age and sex of a bird can be important for studying many aspects of avian ecology and evolution, including life history evolution, reproductive ecology, and behavioral ecology. Ornithologists use a variety of characteristics ...
متن کاملPhylogeny, historical biogeography and the evolution of migration in accipitrid birds of prey (Aves: Accipitriformes)
Migration plays a fundamental part in the life of most temperate bird species. The re gu lar, largescale seasonal movements that characterize temperate migration systems appear to have originated in parallel with the postglacial northern expansion of tropical species. Migratoriness is also influenced by a number of ecological factors, such as the ability to survive harsh winters. Hence, under...

Dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) from two elevations in the Rocky Mountains of Canada display different life histories. Birds breeding at high elevation face a later and compressed reproductive season during which they raise on average half the number of broods (young) than their low-elevation conspecifics. Fledglings at high elevation are heavier, fatter, and have an increased chance of survi...
متن کاملEnvironmental heterogeneity and population differences in blue tits personality traits
Environmental heterogeneity can result in spatial variation in selection pressures that can produce local adaptations. The pace-of-life syndrome hypothesis predicts that habitat-specific selective pressures will favor the coevolution of personality, physiological, and life-history phenotypes. Few studies so far have compared these traits simultaneously across different ecological conditions. In...
متن کاملAdaptive significance of play: Are we getting closer?
Life history theory predicts that animals whose activities impose time, energy or survivorship costs at one stage of their lives will subsequently suffer incremental decreases in fitness unless there are compensatory benefits. Play, a widespread activity among juvenile mammals and several orders of birds' appears costly, yet its adaptive significance is poorly understood despite over 15 years o...
